Read the text and answer the questions in the Exercise section: Looking at the text. See how much you remember of the text you have just read. After correcting your mistakes, (if you had any, that is), summarize the story of Shakespeare and his theatre. Feel free to pad out any details from other sources, Write approx. 1 page.
Task 2, Literary classics
Read all four extracts of literary classics (Emma, Oliver Twist, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, I Hear America Singing, A Room of One’s Own). Choose two of them to and answer the questions in the Exercise Section.

Write an essay about your chosen author (see Progress Gold B, Resource section - On writing for help). Write 2-3 pages.
Describe the literary period during which the author worked and lived. What makes the author interesting and important? What kind of effect did the author have on the world?
Also include a personal response to the facts presented. What makes the author "classic" according to you?
Study the texts and do the exercises in Progress Gold B, Chapter 4 to learn more about literature and classic authors from the English speaking world before you start.
